SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY DIVISION, ASTEC


    To identify areas in which science & technology can be utilize for achieving the socio-economic objectives of the state and in particular, the objectives of tackling the problems of unemployment and poverty in rural areas and the under privileged sections of the society by infusing science & technology.

    To initiate, support, promote and co-ordinate research and development projects which are relevant to the achievement of specific s & t objectives and help in the utilization of natural as well as human resources of the state through institutions of the state and with interaction with national bodies with s&t components and ipr activities.

    To promote popularization of science & technology, growth of scientific temper and attitude among all sections of people and children and dissemination of s&t knowledge to increase the public understanding and acceptance of science & technology.

    To act in critical gap areas of S & T application which are not in the purview of state conventional institutions.

Aryabhatta Science Centre in Block level

The S&T division of the council had set up these centers at 219 numbers of development blocks of the state in 2008 under a state plan (DST, GOA) with the objectives of building scientific attitude among the school students and common people; to make science education exciting through experimentation and other hands on activities; to promote basic science as a career for students. Since then these centres are growing as centres of S&T activities at the grass root level of the state. These centres carry out S&T activities throughout the year and is run by a block level coordinator, set up in schools, colleges and ngos. the centres are provided with kit, tools, audio visual systems, books, cds, solar lighting system, gps, telescope etc. efforts are on to strengthen the infrastructure based facilities of the centre.

Science & Mathematics Facilitators in Schools of Assam

The S&T division had initiated this project in all the legislative assembly constituencies (126 nos.) of the state in 130 schools selected by the district administration in 2010 under a state plan support to improve the science and mathematics education in schools by supporting regular teachers. science and mathematics facilitators after a intensive 21 days residential training program were engaged in the schools with the objectives to improve the method of science and mathematics teaching in the schools of the state; to build up a pool of innovative science and mathematics teachers to act as a facilitator in pursuing science and mathematics in school level. Annual review meetings of their activities at schools are held and they have been provided with low cost science kit for utilizations in the class rooms.

TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR SKILL FORMATION

Programs are taken up to develop skill among the youth and professionals with new and emerging ideas of science and technology. as example areas like bamboo, plastic, electronics, pisciculture, medical science (endocrine gland function) etc.

Final year students of engineering colleges and universities are encouraged to build up S&T solution to scientific and technical problems.

The scheme support the state innovators for generating need based technology with following objectives: To encourage the grass-root innovators by providing financial and technical help. To create awareness on technology generation and development among the grass-root level innovators. To guide the innovators to obtain patent.

PATENT INFORMATION CENTRE

OBJECTIVES

To create awareness about intellectual property rights (IPR), especially patents, in the state of Assam and neighboring region of this centre and enable patent search for the universities, industries, government departments and R&D institutions in the state and around.

To analyze the patent information on a regular basis and suggest new programmes for R&D based on such information.

To guide the inventors in respect of patenting their inventions. centre is filling patents, design, copyright and registration of authorized user for GI muga silk. Organizing seminars and workshop and extenting IPR services to the people.

TRANSLATION OF BOOKS FROM ENGLISH TO ASSAMESE

Three popular books of physics have been translated to Assamese for distribution among the school students for encouraging reading habits and to generate curiosity about physical phenomena through mother tongue.
